The Institute for Healthier Communities provides knowledge and skill-building events that are open to the public and free of charge. These events are intended to help reduce the barriers learners face in accessing the professional development and coaching opportunities they need to be successful in the competitive pre-health environment.

Introduction to the Institute for Healthier Communities

This session will provide participants with an opportunity to learn more about the Institute for Healthier Communities, the pathway to becoming a IHC Scholar, and the professional development and coaching sessions we have planned for the upcoming year.

First Tuesday Medical School Application Prep Series

These sessions will provide participants coaching, education, and skill building opportunities geared towards helping them prepare for the upcoming medical school application cycle, with a series that starts in September and ends the following. August. These sessions are open to learners who will be applying this upcoming cycle, and those who wish to get ahead on preparing to apply in future cycles. All sessions will be held at 9 PM Eastern on the first Tuesday of each month. Sessions take place live via Zoom. Only select sessions will be recorded. Learners must register for each session they want to attend using the links below.

This session provides an overview of the medical school application process and the Institute’s recommended preparation timeline. Key preparation tasks, check-in points, and competitiveness criteria are discussed.

This session will provide an overview of evidence-based strategies for effective knowledge acquisition and retention. Ways to utilize these strategies to improve academic performance, enhance MCAT studying efficiency, and increase preparation for the challenges of medical school will be discussed.

This session will teach participants the activities the Institute uses with our Scholars to help them articulate and refine their unique point of view. Participants will then learn how to leverage their unique point of view to stand out to admission committee members with their personal statement, secondary essays, and interview responses.

This session will provide participants with insight into developing a high-yield study plan. Common resources and pitfalls will be discussed. Additionally, insight will be provided into effective self-assessment strategies and key progress checkpoints.

Target Audience: Any pre-health student. Highly recommended for college freshmen & sophomores, and for anyone planning on taking the MCAT in the upcoming year.

This session will provide insight into what makes for high-quality, impactful letters of recommendation. Strategies for connecting with effective letter writers will be discussed. Coaching will be provided on how to utilize the Institute’s letter of recommendation request process to optimize the quality of your letters of recommendation.

Target Audience: Any pre-health student. Highly recommended for college freshmen & sophomores, and for anyone planning on applying to medical school, professional school, or graduate school in the upcoming year.

This session is a limited-capacity workshop (max 15 learners). The focus of this workshop will be on presenting personal statement introductions. Feedback on the strength and effectiveness of the hook will be provided. Common personal statement red flags will be discussed.

This session will provide guidance on the critical process of building your medical school list. Regional, institutional, and policy factors impacting medical school admission will be discussed. Recommendations and strategies for increasing your odds of medical school admission will be provided.


When: Tuesday, March 3, 2026.


Target Audience: Any pre-health student. Highly recommended for college freshmen & sophomores, and for anyone planning on applying to medical school, professional school, or graduate school in the upcoming year.

This session will provide an overview of the various paths to and through medical school. Gap years, post-bacc programs, master’s degrees, PhD & MD-PhD programs, and employment will be discussed. Coaching will be provided on how to navigate building a path to and through medical school for yourself.

Target Audience: Any pre-health student. Highly recommended for college freshmen & sophomores, and for anyone planning on applying to medical school, professional school, or graduate school in the upcoming year.

This session focuses on providing clarity on the AMCAS application and the medical school application process. An overview of both will be provided, in addition to a discussion of common misperceptions, pitfalls, and ways to optimize the process. Time will be provided for addressing participant questions.

Target Audience: Any pre-med student wanting to learn more about the application process and preparation timeline. Highly recommended for upcoming 2027 cycle applicants.

This session will discuss medical school secondary applications and interviews. Strategies for preparing for, and optimizing success during, these steps will be discussed. Participant questions will be addressed.


When: Tuesday, June 2, 2026.


Target Audience: Any pre-med student wanting to learn more about the application process and preparation timeline. Highly recommended for 2027 cycle applicants.

This session is a limited-capacity workshop (max 15 learners). The focus of this workshop will be on helping participants prepare for medical school interviews. Participants will be asked common interview questions, and be provided with feedback and coaching on responses. Strategies for effectively navigating interviews will be discussed.


When: Tuesday, July 7, 2026


Target Audience: Any pre-med student wanting to learn more about the application process and preparation timeline. Highly recommended for 2027 cycle applicants.


Registration: Registration for this event will open in June 2025.

This session will provide an overview of how to leverage stress to increase physical and mental performance and capacity. Physiological stress, its sources, and ways to reduce it, while performing at a high level will be discussed. Concrete strategies for increasing performance and stress capacity will be provided.


When: Tuesday, August 4, 2026.
